UK mobile operator 3 is set to launch a VoIP wireless phone, aggressively priced at £12 a month contract as well as pay as you go, and will feature a 2MB camera and MP3 player as well as video.
According to a report in the Register the mobile operator would not confirm the phone's existence, but industry rumors suggest the handset will be launched today and available in-store by Thursday.
3 has been offering Skype as a service on some of its phones for a while, on its X-Series range, but the connection from the phone handset to 3 is over normal cellular lines then switches to VoIP for the rest of the connection. This minimizes some of the quality issues associated with mobile VoIP.
