What makes it a fierce leader: Once a humble cable television
company, Comcast is aggressively reshaping itself into a true "digicom" offering
communications services across the spectrum. It now stands as the second largest
ISP in the USA with over 12.5 million subscribers and has 3.5 million--and
growing--digital voice customers well ahead of pure play VoIP operator Vonage,
which has seen its subscriber level plateau at 2.5 million. This makes Comcast
the true VoIP leader of America and with those growth numbers it is set to
become the fourth biggest wireline carrier, an impressive result from a standing
start.
What to look for: Not so long ago derided as America's
worst service organisation Comcast has made a genuine effort to rebuild its
service culture. There is still plenty of room for improvement, but from a VoIP
perspective Comcast has created a new line of business around digital voice
making it the market leader for consumer VoIP. It may be vanilla VoIP, but the
service offers PSTN quality, is stable and has slashed phone bills for every ex-STN user.
