ACMA ruling may force changes on VoIP providers

Tools

Skype and other global VoIP providers may have to go back to the drawing board in order to make their softphones and services comply with new rules proposed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). The ACMA wants VoIP providers that offer access to the PSTN to provide their subscribers with free access to Australia's 000 and 106 emergency numbers. Australian VoIP operators will find it easier to comply than global VoIP providers. This is because global operators must provide access to the emergency numbers without any country code prefix. All the operators also must offer emergency connections to customers who have no funds in their accounts.
