Addressing UC interoperability challenges
As unified communications increasingly dominates the buzz and news announcements in the IP telephony market, interoperability challenges will only increase, threatening the ROI that UC systems reportedly provide to businesses. Presence is one area of UC ripe for interoperability issues and potential innovation, according to a blog post by Don Van Doren, founder of communications consultancy Vanguard Communications.
Van Doren argues that status updates and presence settings currently are overly reliant on manual user interaction and don't have enough policy settings and business rules assigned to them to make them truly effective for more efficient collaboration. In the post, he parallels the evolution of voicemail and email systems with UC presence application development. He said he hopes UC apps will eventually interoperate more effectively so they mimic email's uptake and productivity increases, rather than follow the roadmap of voicemail, which he said has been relegated to its "lowest effective use" due to lack of interoperability.
