Analyst: Unified Communications can't keep up with Twitter
At a recent Gartner Symposium in Australia, analyst Nick Jones made some interesting claims. He said unified communications (UC) lacked a definition and called it a ponzi scheme, saying its just a bunch of stuff a vendor wants to sell you.
Seems a bit harsh--I am having trouble believing UC vendors have sinister intentions when they bundle services to make communications easier. Jones also lobbed critiques at UC offerings for not supporting Twitter, but he clearly hasn't seen the latest UC offerings which almost all offer some form of Twitter integration. His main concern, however, might be valid. As the speed of consumer communications moves at light speed, developing enterprise communications systems is getting tougher. Jones says UC will always be outdated and doesn't think companies should force more tech savvy employees to use outdated systems when they already use something better privately.
His critique looks like a challenge to me. How will companies create UC systems that are flexible and easiliy upgraded to support the future's new and exciting forms of communication?
