Asterisk VoIP gets long term support with newest version

Tools

Open-source is always an exciting way to go with software, but it also offers some risk when working with software that might not be fully supported by a community--or worse be vaporware. No one would accuse Digium's Asterisk of being vaporware of course, and now they've release Asterisk 1.8 which offers long term support from Digium for the next four years.

With a long term support release, developers working with Asterisk can rest assured that their products will be supported. The new release supports SRTP (Secure Real-Time Transport Protocol) which along with Asterisk's secure SIP, means version 1.8 has fully encrypted call capabilities. The new version also includes caller ID and Google Voice support.
