AstriCon 2008 - Skype/Asterisk partnership announcement

Tools

Phoenix, Arizona - Digium and Skype have announced a partnership to enable the Asterisk telephony platform to seamlessly access Skype's service via a channel driver.

The solution is currently in a private beta and will enable business owners to make phone calls through an Asterisk IP PBX through the Skype service, including the use of Skype names for dialing.  Support for Skype's wideband codec should be available when it goes into general release, with support for video to be incorporated down the road. Switchvox, Digium's turnkey IP PBX for SMBs, is also expected to incorporate support for Skype in a future release.

Further coverage of the Digium/Skype announcement by FierceVoIP will be delivered later in the day.  A brief slideshow of the announcement can be found here.
