Avaya bundles UC package with Lenovo

Tools

Avaya will pre-load its softphone voice application onto Lenovo PCs in an ambitious drive to extend its dominance beyond the call center market. The application will be fully featured and will enable enterprises to offer a unified communications solution for all users who have either a ThinkPad notebook or ThinkCenter desktop.

Avaya commands some 40 percent of the call-center market, giving it roughly 25 percent for enterprise telephony; it's hoping bundling its softphone application at a discounted price ($51) will appeal to firms wanting to unify their communications for all users, especially those who have a high number of mobile users. The Lenovo PC enables firms to find employees no matter where they are and gives users full access to a suite of UC functions. The Avaya software tightly integrates with the PC, including a bio-metric log on and enabling the keyboard to flash when ever a voice mail arrives.

The Lenovo deal is the first bundling of telephony with a major PC manufacturer, and follows an announcement last week that Dell was partnering with open source internet telephony company Fonality, to offer a IP PBX service to its enterprise customers.
