Broadband, VoIP bundles could push market to saturation?
A recent report from analysts at Point Topic put forth some nice figures about the health of the VoIP market. They estimated that one in five broadband subscribers had a VoIP service connected as well. They expect VoIP to continue to grow rapidly as long as the market doesn't saturate sooner.
VoIP had over 100 million subscribers worldwide at the end of 2009 and it added 12 million new lines in the first half of 2010. With growth speed like that you've got to get excited for the potential of the market, but then there are also examples of what happens once just about everyone has VoIP.
Point Topic offers up France as an example where everyone has access to a VoIP service. There 70 percent of households have access to VoIP service and consumers see it as a low cost offering and expect price competition for their loyalty. In France, service providers generally offer VoIP as part of a broadband bundle. China has more opportunity with only one in 20 customers with broadband also adopting VoIP and in the US one in three have both services.
The report expects VoIP to continue its growth to 200 million subs by 2015 unless the market reaches saturation earlier.
