Buzz hints at 3G support for Apple FaceTime
Apple disciples are buzzing about the possibility that Apple officially will enable its FaceTime video calling application to work over 3G mobile networks in its upcoming iOS 5 release. The app has been usable on 3G in the past with the help of a jailbreak, and could be used on 3G iPhones if using the iPhone Personal Hotspot capability. Still, 3G FaceTime usage has never been formally supported by Apple, perhaps because Apple's carrier partners have not wanted to open their 3G networks to the potential traffic explosion.
Reportedly, if the app goes 3G in iOS 5, Apple will still leave it up to carriers whether or not they want to support FaceTime usage on 3G. If the carriers' negative reactions to tethering and their slow, cautious embrace of Skype are any indication, Facetime will not run rampant on 3G networks anytime soon.
