Calm words over net neutrality
The fight over net neutrality got some thoughtful discussion, of all things, in Washington the other day. There was a State of the Internet conference on Capitol Hill which brought together people from all sides of the issue. Rep. Rick Boucher, a backer of neutrality, acknowledged that an open network needs to coexist with technical innovation. Rob Atkinson, of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, called last year's acrimonious debate "overly polarized." And panelists pointed out that by blocking spam, filtering port 25, and blocking high-bandwidth features of sites like ESPN, some degree of blocking is already happening.
