A case for UC in disaster recovery
IBM recently spoke to Network World about how unified communications and collaboration (UCC) systems can ease work experiences and speed up response times during crises.
IBM director of unified communications and collaboration, John Del Pizzo noted how an IBM user--Missouri Office of Homeland Security--used UCC products to create the Missouri Emergency Resource Information System (MERIS). The system replaced old telephones, radios and paper maps once used to track and respond to crisis within the state.
Now with the new system, the office found they could respond to a crisis much faster. The system was put to the test when the state suffered a 17 day power outage, but it allowed emergency responders to quickly determine where resources were and where they were needed. This enabled the agency to get the state running on back up generators much faster than in the past.
