Cellcos respond to Skype's FCC broadband petition

Tools

Skype's got a similar fight going with AT&T and Verizon Wireless here in the States. Skype has asked the FCC to make wireless carriers subject to the same rules as consumer broadband carriers. The wireless industry says bandwidth restrictions and other technical limitations make that impractical. AT&T says its network is optimized for circuit-switched calls; because VoIP is optimized for packet switching, carrying its traffic would be inefficient. Verizon Wireless says that forcing its network to be open to anyone who wants to use it for broadband access would be unwarranted regulation. Neither comment appeared to address 3G or 4G data services, which both carriers are rolling out.
