Charter rolls out SIP trunking, upping its business play

Tools

Another cable operator is stepping into the SIP trunking market, with Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR) saying it would offer SIP trunking services to businesses with more than 20 employees.

The St. Louis-based company has steadily been moving away from its role as a traditional cable provider, modeling itself, instead, as an ISP and expanding its business offerings.

It plans to roll out SIP trunking in Wisconsin and Missouri by year's end and expects to launch enterprise-wide in early 2012.

Charter said its SIP trunking will deliver a high-quality, reliable voice service through a converged voice and data fiber network that can scale quickly; eliminating the need for the customer to purchase separate circuits or connections for voice traffic.
