China's VoIP crackdown likely focused on small domestic operations

Some VoIP providers and users maybe sighing a breath of relief after initially getting worked up of China cracking down on certain VoIP providers. A number of spins on the news speculated that Skype would be targeted by the giant nation's beuracrats, but that result is being denied by people close to the matter.

Skype's Chinese business partner TOM Group has come out to allay fears that Skype's operations in China were under seige. According to the company, they are well within compliance with the law.

Early reports stated that the Chinese Ministry of Information and Industry Technology (MIIT) was moving to crack down on illegal VoIP operations--namely those services not being provided by the three state sponsored telecom companies China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom. The MIIT did not specify which VoIP providers it would be targetting, but speculators now believe the moves are aimed at taking down small domestic VoIP operations.
