Cingular CTO: VoIP not all that bad

Cingular's thinking about getting friendly with VoIP, too. Like most cell carriers, the GSM-based Cingular has been uncomfortable with its customers using its data service for VoIP and other converged services. But Cingular CTO Kristin Rinne told a Yankee Group conference this week that her company wasn't unalterably opposed to VoIP--it just wanted to settle billing and traffic management issues (including voice quality) before giving the green light. Rinne also said Cingular is going to start installing IMS technology by the end of the year, with net-wide deployment by the end of the decade.
