Cisco delivers its 30 millionth IP phone
Cisco started selling VoIP phones in 1998 and it's one of the largest players in the space. This week it announced that it had moved its 30 millionth IP phone in the offices of financial firm HSBC.
Cisco is using the milestone to highlight its 13 years in the business and to show how far the IP phone technology has come. Video and telepresence which make up much of the excitement in the field today were novelties back when Cisco developed their first IP phone.
"The shipment of 30 million IP phones is a significant benchmark for Cisco in the unified communications and collaboration market," said Zeus Kerravala, analyst, Yankee Group. "Cisco has been both a pioneer in legitimizing VoIP as an alternative to traditional telephony but also an innovator as it has maintained its competitive lead over the past decade."
HSBC began deploying Cisco Unified IP Phones over 18 months ago and is halfway through a three-year global program that will see 354,000 Cisco devices installed by the end of 2012. The company plans to explore video conferencing to reduce its carbon footprint.
