Cisco firmware update to bring HD voice to SMB phones
Cisco is set to standardize the high-definition G722 codec on its main small business desk phone with a firmware update, signaling another shift toward HD voice for Cisco and the telephony equipment industry. Cisco is planning to upgrade all of its small business phones to HD voice by year's end, with the former Sipura team playing a major role in the transition.
Cisco's main small business phone, the SPA525G, was designed with HD voice in mind, the company said, as changes were made to the speakers and microphone to better support wideband codecs. Once the firmware update is complete, users will be able to get HD quality voice when connecting with a user of another HD-enabled handset, such as ones made by snom, Polycom and Astra.
