Comcast phone outages in NJ, Pittsburgh

Tools

It's just plain hard to quantify trouble like this, partly because it's geographically dispersed and people don't always know their phone service is out (electric blackouts, by comparison, are much more obvious and dramatic). Also, there's no central reporting of phone outages. But reliability is one of the ways that legacy telcos and TDM PBXes are competing against VoIP, so word major VoIP outages really are news. We're hearing that Comcast has been having some trouble with its digital telephony service in New Jersey and in the Pittsburgh area. In New Jersey, reports say, some customers lost service after "routine maintenance;" in Pittsburgh, a spokeswoman said about 200,000 cable and phone customer lost service when Comcast was cutting over from old Adelphia cable plant.
