The debate: Ooma or MagicJack? Or maybe Google VoIP?
When Ooma and MagicJack first arrived on the scene, Google VoIP hadn't showed up yet. Skype wasn't nearly the powerhouse that it is today. The two plug and play VoIP devices offer similar pricing schemes: buy the device, get a certain amount of free calling included. Ooma involves an initial $250 down payment and then free calls for ever--unless you upgrade to Premium service. Ooma works right with your broadband Internet connection, the MagicJack does the same but needs your computer and software. In recent times more and more device-less VoIP services, though, like Google VoIP, have arrived needing no downpayments and still offering free calls. The two devices are still duking it out over their own segments of the population where people want a device to hold and perhaps a higher quality service you can't get with the free stuff. This latest Ooma review likens Ooma to the Anti-MagicJack. Review
