DECT phones go VoIP next year

Tools

If you haunt computer stores, you'll probably have seen a new generation of wireless phones using the DECT standard. Suppliers of those phones have now agreed to build wireless VoIP into them. The expectation, say leaders of the DECT Forum, is that people will still use their computers to do intensive work on the Net, but will be able to use their wireless DECT phones to make IP phone calls, listen to Internet radio or check a phone directory. The VoIP enhancements are slated for the third quarter of 2007; streaming audio is planned for mid-2008. The acronym to look for is CAT-iq: Cordless Advanced Technology-internet and quality.
