With an eye on enterprise, Citrix buys social collaboration platform Podio
Citrix (Nasdaq: CTXS) has acquired privately held Podio, a cloud-based collaborative work platform, which isaimed at SMBs and offers users a combination of traditional business apps and social software. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Citrix, the maker of GoToMeeting, said the purchase is a "natural extension" of its collaboration platform.
"Podio extends our ability to provide a simple, secure and ‘works for everyone' collaborative work platform in this post-PC era," said Brett Caine, SVP and GM for Citrix Online Services Division. "The Podio technology is a powerful and innovative solution that is a natural fit with the Citrix portfolio...We are also excited about having the Podio team as part of our organization. They are an extraordinarily talented and visionary group, who share our passion for improving the way work is done."
Citrix said more details about how it planned to integrate the offering would come out over time, but the deal gives the company a tool with which to compete with other social collaboration efforts that have begun to crowd the field. And, although it currently has a SMB focus, Podio does count among its clients Twitter and publisher Condé Nast, meaning pushing Podio up into the large enterprise market could be part of Citrix's longer-term play.
Podio's cloud-based platform allows users to post real-time status updates, provides them the ability to link to, share and manage tasks and give comments and feedback. It also offers a mobile app for iPhones and Android phones.
The platform includes a sizeable app market that allows users to pick and choose from individual apps or packs of apps to support everything from public relations campaigns to recruitment and web app development.
It's offered as a free service for user groups up to five employees and five external members, or for $8 a month per employee for larger groups.
Podio also can be integrated or embedded with other services that may be standard in a company's business, including traditional enterprise or business solutions as well as cloud-based data storage, online collaboration and content tools including Box, Campaign Monitor, Dropbox, Evernote, FreshBooks, Google Apps, Google Docs, Google Alerts, Instapaper and Zendesk.
The company was launched in 2009 in Copenhagen.
"What we loved about Podio is that it created the platform where you can download and create," Bernardo de Albergaria, who heads Citrix's online collaboration unit, told Reuters.
