FCC reports VoIP use growing rapidly

Tools

The old landline loss story rears its head again. This time the FCC has published its own findings and gives the spotlightlight to VoIP service.

According to an FCC report, as of December 2009 there were 26 million interconnected VoIP subscribers alongside the 127 million traditional switched-access phone lines in service. The FCC noted that VoIP subscribers grew 22 percent during 2009 with most of the growth in residential subscriptions.

Being that it is 2009, one has to wonder how many more of those traditional phone lines are gone and new VoIP subscriptions have risen in their place. The FCC report was careful to note that the line loss couldn't all be accounted for by the new VoIP subs and that mobile calling plans seemed to be more at fault for the line loss.
