Fonality ships a bag of Trixbox
In an age where PC margins have shrunk to the thickness of a piece of copier paper, it's a little odd to see a VoIP company selling a commodity box, as they've announced at VON. But there's a reason behind Fonality's seeming madness with Trixbox. Fonality CEO Chris Lyman says his company owns the largest community of Asterisk users; it makes its money on support and service of the IP PBX and on its own open-source extensions. Asterisk is software, and although it runs on commodity hardware, it's not such a big leap to believe that there are users who don't want to mess around with building their own Linux box. The bright green rack-mountable Trixbox is a fairly powerful Intel-based system with a pair of RAID-1 disk drives, good air flow, and some network cards. It sells for $999, including Asterisk itself. That's a pretty good price for a server--not much more than the component cost. If someone wants to set up an Asterisk PBX for not a lot of money or effort, Trixbox might be a good way to go.
