Fring bows revamped Apple iPhone app, shuts door on Windows Mobile users
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone users have a new update for the popular Fring app available (version 4.1.2 available here), which includes giving users the option of using either of the iPhone's cameras for video calls (an image of the caller, or of the callers surrounding), improved battery use, one-click fringOut purchases using an iTunes account and an assortment of bug fixes.
Both Skype and Apple's FaceTime already allow you to "flip" your phone's camera, but it's an option Fring users have eagerly been anticipating.
While the iPhone Fring app update was expected, the decision by the company to no longer offer new users of Windows Mobile, UIQ or J2ME access to the Fring app was a little more of a surprise, despite declining shipments of devices with Windows Mobile. As for J2ME and UIQ, its probably the technical shortfalls that limit some of Fring's features.
"We will continue supporting existing users on these platforms for the foreseeable future," the company wrote on its blog. "A big thank you for our users and hope to see you soon on our fully supported platforms including iPhone, Android and Nokia/Symbian."
The Israel-based start up didn't elaborate any further and made no mention of supporting Windows Phone 7.
Fring will continue to support existing users of its Windows Mobile, Java, and UIQ clients, but moving forward, the company will only be offering downloads of its apps for iOS, Android, and Symbian.
