Global Crossing goes flat-rate--to a point
Speaking of business models, Global Crossing is trying to wean the world off paying per minute. The carrier already was providing essentially free VoIP calls anywhere in the world that Global Crossing was peered. Now it's extended the same deal to other VoIP carriers--calls that don't have to bridge over the PSTN get carried for a flat rate. The deal get steadily better, of course, as Global Crossing builds out its network. This is bad news for carriers with small networks and who are badly peered, and only goes to underline the growing importance of peering services.
