GMN debuts maritime satellite VoIP services
Global Marine Networks and Vobal Technologies are partnering to make VoIP services available to maritime customers. Vobal technology is being integrated as part of GMN's RedPort Global maritime services, giving ship operators, captain and crew access to high quality, low-bandwidth prepaid voice connections.
RedPort Global also offers a suite of satellite network management solutions for maritime and ship-to-shore communications. The RedPort wXa routers are Inmarsat-certified for use with Inmarsat VLA accounts for FleetBroadband service. With RedPort Global, VSAT, FleetBroadband and other IP-based data, users can save up to 80 percent on their satellite airtime usage while accelerating data throughput.
RedPort VoIP hardware will include a full PBX to integrate or function as a vessel's primary communications system, the company said. Prepaid voice access lets ship operators sell service to crew or passengers to create a new revenue stream. Satellite VoIP calls consume as little as 6 kbps using the Vobal technology.
