Google to hang up Gizmo5 shortly
Online VoIP company, Gizmo5, made headlines when it became an acquisition target for Google back in November 2009. The company's product has since become an integral part of the Gmail/GTalk empire.
Since the acquisition, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has integrated Gizmo5's VoIP functionality into its GMail system allowing customers to make VoIP calls right from their inbox. The inbox VoIP calls can be made to regular wireline and mobile lines, and regular voice chats can be completed to other Gmail users.
Techcrunch reports a number of features may be lost as Gizmo5 shuts down as they have not yet been transferred to the Google voice offerings. SIP based mobile phone calling over WiFi has not yet made it to the Google Voice platform and neither has the ability to hook the service up to SMB PBX hardware and support for analog phone adapters. Desktop applications were also part of the Gizmo5 service, and, while Google was working on an offering based on the Gizmo5 setup, the project seems to have been scrapped.
