Google taps Kansas City for ultra-high speed network

It's going to Kansas City, Kansas City here it comes... Google's got some crazy fast Internet there and I'm gonna get me some... (with apologies to Wilbert Harrison and Fats Domino).

After months of waiting, and 1,100 applications from towns and cities across the United States seeking to be the spot Goolge (NASDAQ:GOOG) tests its screaming-fast 1 Gbps broadband, the company said Kansas City, Kan. was the community it felt the FTTH project would be best suited.

"In selecting a city, our goal was to find a location where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community and develop relationships with local government and community organizations," Vice President of Access Services Milo Medin wrote on Google's blog. "We've found this in Kansas City."

Google has signed a development agreement with the city and says it believes it can start offering its ultra-high speed network in 2012.

The good news for the 1,099 entities that applied and didn't get selected? Google says it will be "looking closely at ways to bring ultra high-speed Internet to other cities across the country."

"Today is the start, not the end the project," Milo said. "And over the coming months, we'll be talking to other interested cities about the possibility of us bringing ultra high-speed broadband to their communities."
