HP throws guantlet at Cisco with new data center
Billing its new HP/3Com-combo data center package as 'Cisco-free', HP seems to be starting a turf war with Cisco's Unified Computing System.
The new HP offering combines HP's ProCurve technology with newly acquired 3Com's VoIP, router and switch offerings. The new package achieves twice the port and capacity density, and a 50 percent reduction in power consumption versus previous solutions according to the company. The networking offering also provides a 'single pane of glass' management to allow network settings, configurations and monitoring for all the interconnected devices to be done from one place simplifying past redundancies and streamlining IT processes.
HP has been making some big moves in the space. Back in May 2009, HP and Microsoft announced a deal to collaborate on a massive unified communications and cloud computing offering.
