IDC: Microsoft's in VoIP for the applications
IDC has a new report about Microsoft's getting into the VoIP market. It should surprise no one that Microsoft's march on VoIP, with its upcoming Unified Communications Server and its recent deal with Nortel, is designed to wedge the company even deeper into corporate IT infrastructure. On the one hand, Microsoft will use VoIP to enhance its current enterprise products, the study says. On the other hand, Microsoft (correctly) sees the VoIP market as fractioned and not particularly well formed. Nothing like bringing order to a scattered market for fun and profit. All's not rosy for Microsoft, though: the study wonders if the company's strength in the enterprise will translate into the carrier business.
