Indian cellcos try to close out VoIPcos

Tools

It's not unusual for revolutionary entrants into a sector to attempt to shut the very door that let them in so that no one else can follow their path to success. The latest examples are Indian wireless operators that are trying to get regulators to prohibit ISPs from offering VoIP. One of the beauties of this particular dispute is that both sides get to play the victim. The wireless carriers say the ISPs would get away with paying just a fraction of the appropriate license fees. The ISPs complain that they can complete international calls, but they're not allowed to carry traffic within India itself. Besides, the ISPs say, the telcos themselves aren't offering VoIP, so who are they to talk?
