Intel announces new chip to drive next-gen VoIP applications

Tools

Intel is targeting next-gen VoIP applications with its new Xeon processor tentatively called Jasper Forest, which the company said will be launched in the first half of 2010. The new processor will support more dense communications solutions while also lowering system power consumption from previous models.

The new chip also comes with "non-transparent bridging functionality," which will allow multiple endpoints to connect internally without the need for an external PCIe switch, according to an xchange article. Intel said the new design would let telecommunications companies move away from needing multiple architectures and platforms in their network core, by bringing all system designs into a holistic offering.
