Level 3, Microsoft Lync deliver E911 solution for nomadic VoIP users

Tools

Level 3 Communications (NASDAQ:LVLT) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) are collaborating on a solution that has caused issues for some VoIP providers, including the ability to deliver emergency personnel the location of a 911 call from a nomadic VoIP user.

The announcement comes as the FCC, this week, is scheduled to consider new rules aimed at ensuring VoIP and other new voice communications technologies are more reliable when it comes to E911 location accuracy.

Level 3 said its solution uses its SIP trunking and Enhanced 911 networks, allowing Microsoft Lync users to move throughout the workplace while providing a location at the time of an emergency call. The service enables routing to the appropriate first responders, compared to alternative nomadic 911 solutions, which can only provide pre-registered locations.

"Enterprises expect their 911 voice services to connect them with the appropriate emergency contacts," said Warren Barkley, general manager at Microsoft Lync. "Microsoft Lync is able to offer enterprises the benefits of a unified communications deployment with an easy-to-manage, dynamic and reliable 911 routing solution through Level 3, even as workers change locations."
