Logitech acquires Italian video calling company Mirial

Looking to expand its LifeSize video calling product to the mobile market, Logitech (NASDAQ:LOGI) acquired Italian videoconferencing provider Mirial. Terms of the deal were undisclosed.

The company said Mirial will be integrated into Logitech's LifeSize division to take advantage of the Milan-based company's demonstrated ability to move quickly across platforms. Michael Helmbrecht, vice president of product marketing for LifeSize, told FierceEnterpriseCommunications that Mirial has, in less than a year, moved its software across the Mac and Android mobile platforms as well as PCs.

"They'll help us provide a pathway to other platforms quickly, which is becoming very important because the lifecycle on hardware devices is shortening" he said. "They are totally standards based and can move so quickly that we believe this acquisition puts us into a very good position; our competitors will have to chase us."

With the acquisition, LifeSize now offers a more comprehensive portfolio of universal video collaboration solutions, from conference room endpoints and infrastructure to desktop, tablet and mobile video calling software.

Mirial supports a broad range of iOS and Android devices including the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPad 2; HTC EVO, Desire, Incredible, myTouch 4G, Sensation and ThunderBolt; Motorola Atrix and Xoom; Samsung Epic 4G, Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab, as well as the Google Nexus S and Dell Streak.

Mirial products are expected to be available immediately through LifeSize.
