Mashup yields Skypefax
This year's winner in the Skype Mashup competition added faxing to the VoIP services many features. PamConsult an eBay certified company in Ebstorf, Germany, won with PamFax, an application that allows global fax transmission on Skype credits. Status notifications are delivered via Skype chat, SMS or email.
Skype's Windows version was attacked by a worm last week disguised as a .jpg file. The worm was said to be disabling security software and preventing updates. No new information has been posted at Skype regarding the worm.
FierceVoIP reader Paul Lopez notes that IT pros and analysts have cautioned against using Skype for business, but a substantial number of downloads indicate a trend to the contrary. Certainly a fax capability makes Skype an even more attractive play for SOHOs, but the drawback is vulnerability to hacks and service attacks. Skype probably best remains a supplementary voice service for business.
