Microsoft launches Office 365, eyes Skype tie-in

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) formally launched (or re-launched?) its Office 365 cloud services platform this week, with Microsoft Lync integrated for communications functions, but Skype is also likely to play a role.

Microsoft officials said that after the Skype acquisition is completed, future versions of Office 365 likely will allow Lync users to have their Skype contacts integrated into the platform. The direction offered by Microsoft seems to at least provide a general answer as to how Skype might become part of Microsoft's evolving unified communications and cloud services strategies.

Office 365 itself is, in some ways, a revamping of productivity services and features the software giant already offered.
