Microsoft launching Lync VoIP app for iPhone... and Xbox?!
Just because Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) has an interest in promoting its own Windows Phone 7 operating system, doesn't mean it can't push its unified communications platform across the mobile ecosystem. If Lync is going to florish as a preferred UC platform, it needs to be on all types of cellphones.
Enter iLync. The new app is Microsoft's iPhone client that will allow users to participate in conferences mediated by the Lync UC platform. The software will be available by the end of the year with Android and Blackberry apps also in the works.
The app is just the beginning of Microsoft's plan to bring Lync connectivity to a number of devices. During this week's at Enterprise Connect show, the company even showcased a Lync connection with the Xbox 360. If we throw in the Kinect and a game of Dance Central, board meetings will never be the same!
