Nortel begins world's biggest VoIP rollout
Nortel has begun the roll out of one of the world's largest VoIP deployments for the U.S. Social Security Administration. The contract is worth an estimated $300 million over 10 years and is in anticipation of an influx of Baby Boomer clients into the social security system over the next five years.
The project replaces the legacy system SSA currently uses. Core network rollout begins immediately and is expected to be complete within 180 days. The schedule calls for replacement of existing telephone systems in 205 of the SSA's nearly 1,600 field offices in the first year and another 500 per year after that. The contract also covers the SSA contact centers which will get a centrally managed contact center solution with carrier-class unified messaging and interactive voice response capable of supporting 55,000 field office agents.
