Oovoo rolls out new app for the iPhone

Oovoo has released an updated version of its app that allows Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone users to conduct up to a six-way video chat, as long as one user is a subscriber to the service. Even without a subscription, the cheapest of which runs about $9.99 a month, three users can still connect at once.

The app enables free video calling to PCs, Macs, Android phones and other iPhones.

Oovoo is going head-to-head with Fring, which launched its own group chat app in April. The company says it currently has about 25 million users, but expects that number to rise now that it's available on the iPhone.

Although the iPhone essentially jumpstarted the video chat market when it introduced its FaceTime app, the FaceTime app itself hasn't kept pace with competitors like fring and oovoo which are taking advantage of Apple's seeming lack of interest in the space.
