PGP creator talks up user-level VoIP encryption

Tools

We've mentioned a couple of times that encryption guru Phil Zimmerman has been working in the VoIP market lately, particularly with Broadcom's session border controllers. Zimmerman is also talking up a project to encrypt VoIP calls at the user level with something called Zfone. Rather than relying on an IT department (or the softphone application itself) to implement encryption at a corporate level, Zfone lets individuals take care of it themselves. Zimmerman's got cred here: he's the author of PGP, the most commonly used e-mail encryption software in the world. Back in the '90s, it looked like a good bet that he'd go to jail over it, but the federal government thought better of it.
