Polycom releases new VoWiFi mobile UC handsets for healthcare, industrial and retail workers

Polycom has just released a new voice over WiFi handset aimed at mobile workers in healthcare, industrial and retail markets. For people running around their workplace, the handset gives them constant access to the unified communications system and adds a barcode scanner for quick data scanning.

The new handset series called Polycom SpectraLink 8400 allows access to important data from anywhere within an enterprise WiFi network. The device is described as rugged and powerful with a thin-client style with an open application platform and developer-friendly browser capability to support enterprise and industry-specific applications. Nurses making rounds in hospitals, inventory control managers in retail spaces, and equipment monitoring systems for manufacturing are all possible applications of the new phone series.

"Having access to people and data when and where you need it is important for any business, but is mission-critical in environments like hospitals, manufacturing facilities and large retail stores," said Jim Kruger, Polycom vice president of Solutions Product Marketing in a release. "Polycom SpectraLink handsets are the gold standard in wireless workplace mobility and we are raising the bar again with the 8400 series in terms of voice quality, reliability, application support and open standards-based interoperability."
