Unified communications specialist Polycom (NASDAQ: PLCM) is launching a new, affordable video offering designed to get emerging companies up and running with a high-quality video conferencing platform that fits tighter budgets. It is also announcing a new, cloud-based initiative to help SMBs deliver secure video solutions on demand.

Polycom said its new video and telepresence offerings were targeted specifically to the SMB market, both on-premise and through the cloud, providing a fast segway to the benefits of video collaboration and a flexible expansion path in line with their business growth.

The company said its RealPresence Ready solution will help cut costs and make video conferencing easier for SMBs. The product delivers business-grade quality, reliability, security and scalability. The company said RealPresence Ready is fully backward and forward compatible with any communications system customers have today or may purchase in the future.

Also new this week is a cloud-based "Virtual Room" service from 8x8 (NASDAQ:EGHT), enabled by the Polycom UC Intelligent Core software platform. It includes Polycom HDX video solutions and Polycom VVX business media phones. 8x8's "Virtual Room" service allows users to join meetings via video and audio devices, as well as web telephony and smart mobile phone clients.

With the new solutions, Polycom hopes to take advantage of U.S. SMB spending, estimated this year at upwards of $125 billion, on advanced technology. Increasingly, companies are adding video solutions to their portfolios to help them stay competitive and boost productivity.

"Polycom has built a strong business in the SMB market over many years with tens of thousands of customers across many industries that choose Polycom for our commitment to interoperability, highest quality and lowest TCO," said Susan Hayden, EVP of Polycom. "As the demand for affordable and easy-to-use video solutions continues to grow, we're doubling down on our SMB initiatives and accelerating the pace at which we'll bring innovative software solutions to market."
