Primus acquires VoIP and SIP provider Unlimitel

With its parent company beginning to fire on all cylinders in the U.S., Primus Canada and its Primus Business Services division, have acquired VoIP and SIP provider Unlimitel in a move designed to strengthen Primus Canada's portfolio of VoIP solutions, particularly within the fast growing Asterisk customer base.

Unlimitel, a multi-service telecommunications company, has been around since 1997 and is seen as a technological leader in the area of VoIP and SIP-based products, providing cost-effective retail SIP solutions to business customers across Canada.

The two companies aren't strangers, having been technology partners for a number of years. The sale-details, which were not released, will enable Primus to offer the combined customer base access to additional product offerings and a greater service reach.

"We are very excited about the prospects ahead as we blend the considerable talents and technology of Primus Business Services and Unlimitel Inc.," said Executive Vice President of Business Services at Primus Canada AJ Byers.  "This acquisition aligns with our promise of delivering quality products and services that are reliable, cost-effective and meet the needs of our customers."

The deal expands Primus' market reach and network footprint to other regions of the country, with a stronger focus in Quebec. Primus Canada's Business Services focuses on data center and managed services solutions, offering services that include virtual storage and security, disaster recovery and cloud computing, voice, and IP connectivity solutions to more than 60,000 Canadian companies. The company owns and manages seven data centers across Canada.

Unlimitel's suite of VoIP services includes an extensive national commercial SIP network, VoIP phone systems, gateways and routers.

"The acquisition by Primus Business Services will enhance Unlimitel's services and level of expertise," says Byers.  "Primus' proven track record of providing unsurpassed quality and service to its customers will only strengthen our offering.  Our customers will now benefit from new product and service initiatives, as well as an expanded service area."

Unlimitel Inc. will continue to run as a separate entity of Primus Business Services under the direction of Stephan Monette.

In November, Primus Telecommunications Group, based in McLean, Va., acquired wholesale telecom exchange service carrier Arbinet Corp., the company's first big move after new leadership took over the company as it emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
