Report: VoIP call quality OK, but variable
More on the VoIP quality spin. You'll remember that Brix Networks and Minicom both examined the quality of VoIP calls and came to opposite conclusions: Brix said quality was bad and getting worse, and Minacom said it was good and getting better. Now comes Keynote Systems, which says its results are somewhere in the middle. Keynote tested service from telcos, cablecos, softphones, VoIP providers and VoIM providers. Essentially, according to Keynote, there was a wide variation on call quality depending on the carrier and even the time of day. Cablecos were reported to have excellent call quality and outperformed telcos in reliability. In MOS numbers, Keynote found an average MOS of 3.58. The lowest-ranked carrier came in at 2.64 and the highest at 4.24. Of course, we'll know VoIP quality is OK when we finally stop hearing about all these reports.
