Reverse engineering for open source angers Skype
A Russian researcher who was intent on creating an open source version of the Skype VoIP client and managed to reverse engineer it is, not surprisingly, in big trouble with Skype. Efim Bushmanov posted the code in a blog and immediately drew sharp word from Skype, which accused him of intellectual property infringement.
Skype has inspired rogue engineers in the past, most recently when the Android mobile version of Skype was released last fall. The episode of reverse engineering in the name of open source comes not long after Skype parted ways with open source PBX creator Digium. Something tells us that open source hacktivists are going to continue to find creative ways to express their concern that Microsoft is in the process of acquiring Skype.
