Road to convergence has many bumps along the way
Convergence is a buzz word that means many things to many people. In the enterprise communications space, it usually refers to the migration of multiple communications technologies and services into a single platform.
Today, the main technologies and services that are coming together in the enterprise are cloud computing, mobile devices, social media and big data. How all of these can be integrated into the enterprise communications environment is a major concern for chief information officers (CIOs) and IT departments.
While the converged vision is breathtaking, its implementation is another matter. There are many bumps on the road to convergence heaven--not the least of which is trying to get all of this new technology to work with legacy systems.
Since enterprises cannot afford to rip out their entire telecom infrastructure and deploy the latest and greatest technology de novo, getting the new and old to work together will challenge IT teams for years to come.
At Gartner's Symposium/ITxpo being held Oct. 21-25 in Orlando, Fla., CIOs, IT managers and analysts are coming together to grapple with the challenges as well as the opportunities presented by convergence.
