SF Vonage users get E911

Tools

Vonage users in San Francisco can now count on emergency services coming when they dial 911. The FCC ordered VoIP carriers two years ago to deploy Enhanced 911 and the Senate has been debating whether to give them more time. Vonage says that 83 percent of its customers now are covered by E911 services. This is something of a big deal in San Francisco: a suburban VoIP user called 911 last month but hung up before he could give an address. Emergency responders had to work through Broadwing and Vonage to get the location--a process that took 30 minutes. The victim had suffered a heart attack, which typically is survivable only when rescuers arrive within six minutes.
