Skype Adds Caller ID to North America Service
North American Skype users can now set a caller ID number for SkypeOut to something meaningful rather than the 000123456 rubbish that otherwise shows up.
Skype users outside of the U.S. could set their SkypeIn number as a caller ID/CLI for Skype calls, but U.S. callers didn't have the option until last week. Now, the service has been modified so a NorAm Skype user can either select their SkypeIn online number, a mobile phone number, or alternatively click to enter in another mobile number as a CallerID. A verification SMS message should arrive within 24 hours.
If your selected mobile or SkypeIn number is in the recipient's phone address book, the caller's name will also appear. For fancy-pants people with multiple SkypeIn numbers, there's an option to automatically display the closest local number, so a call to the U.K. would get the local U.K. number while a U.S. call would get the SkypeIn U.S. number.
The clue for NorAm callers that they are receiving a SkypeOut call is the "1" country code before the phone number; it's normally not displayed on vanilla PSTN calls.
