Skype advertising on Windows app

Tools

Finding more ways to be profitable was one of the main reasons Skype has been putting off its IPO. Enter, advertising.

Yes, that's right, like all things Internet based, Skype's users will soon get some ads to look at during their calling/chatting/videoing experience. The ads, essentially a banner at the top of the 'Home' tab, will roll out beginning with the Skype for Windows app. No word yet on when the ads will roll out to other platforms. The company is assuring users that the ads will not interfere with their experience as users will not be subjected to interruptions or pop-up ads. The company will also be providing non-identifiable demographic information to advertisers unless users opt out.

According to InformationWeek, some users were a little upset by the news. Some users even threatened to join other VoIP and video chat services like Google Talk. It is hard to complain, though, when the service both works and is free.
